We've seen over 30 Christmases here in La Cala de Mijas and it gets better and better with every year. Whether it’s the twinkling lights, family-friendly festivities, or the unique mix of sunshine with Christmas vibes, the Costa del Sol really knows how to do Christmas. Read below some of our favourite Christmas traditions here on the coast!
Lights That Take Your Breath Away
Málaga’s Christmas lights are world famous, and for good reason. Calle Larios in the heart of the city becomes a glowing masterpiece every year, with dazzling light displays that light up the sky. They’re not just pretty to look at—the lights are set to music, turning the streets into an enchanting open-air concert.
Another favorite is the Botanical Gardens in Málaga. At Christmas, they’re transformed into a magical wonderland with themed light displays that will leave you in awe. It’s perfect for a family outing or even a romantic evening stroll.
Festive Fun for Everyone
The Costa del Sol’s towns and villages really come alive at Christmas. Mijas Pueblo, with its picture-perfect whitewashed streets, looks like it’s been plucked straight from a festive postcard. The cobbled lanes are lined with sparkling lights and decorations, and you can pop into the Mayan Monkey chocolate factory for some of the best hot chocolate you’ll ever taste. You can even try your hand at making your own chocolate treats with the kids—great fun and great memories!
Over in La Cala de Mijas, the International Christmas Fair is a real highlight. Think mulled wine, carol singing, festive treats, kids’ activities, and even appearances from Santa and the Three Wise Men. Their lights are always pretty special too!
And if you’re into traditions, don’t miss the beautiful nativity scenes, or belenes, on display in churches and town halls across the region. These handcrafted displays are a big part of Spanish Christmas culture and are absolutely worth checking out.
A Day in the Snow, Costa del Sol Style
Here’s something most people don’t expect when they think of Málaga at Christmas—you can have snow! The Sierra Nevada is just under two hours away, and it’s a brilliant day trip. Whether you want to ski, sledge, or just enjoy the snow, it’s a great way to add a touch of winter magic to your festive season.
All the Sights, Sounds, and Flavours of Christmas
One of our favourite parts of Christmas here is the smell of roasting chestnuts in the air. Street vendors pop up all over the place, and there’s something so comforting about nibbling on warm chestnuts as you wander through the festive streets.
And let’s not forget the food. Whether it’s enjoying a traditional Spanish Christmas treat like turrón or tucking into a festive meal at one of the local restaurants, the Costa del Sol has something for everyone.
It’s All About the Community
What really makes Christmas here so special is the way people come together. There’s a real sense of community, with locals and visitors joining in on parades, concerts, and events.
