It’s Easter Friday, and the Costa del Sol is full of that lovely mix of tradition, sunshine and chocolate. Whether you’re here for the parades, planning a long lunch with friends, or just fancy a weekend of pottering and people-watching – Mijas, La Cala, Fuengirola and Malaga have plenty going on.
Here’s a quick local round-up to help you make the most of it.
What’s Open and When
Let’s start with the practical stuff.
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are all public holidays here, so many shops and businesses will be closed. Supermarkets like Lidl, Carrefour and Mercadona often open in the mornings (usually until around 2pm), but it’s hit and miss – best to stock up now if you haven’t already.
Easter Monday is not a holiday in Spain, so most places will be open as usual.
✅ Our offices will be open on Monday too, if you need anything or just fancy saying hello
Local Processions
Whether you're in the mood for candlelit tradition or just want to soak up the atmosphere, the Semana Santa processionsare well worth a watch.
-
Mijas Pueblo – Good Friday, 9pm is the big one. A candlelit Via Crucis winds through the village. It’s atmospheric, moving, and very Mijas.
-
La Cala de Mijas – Smaller, local, and more relaxed. Lovely for a casual wander in the evening.
-
Fuengirola – Big crowds, big music, big floats. If you like a bit of drama, head into town for the Easter Sunday procession.

Instead of buying an Easter egg this year, make your own – and trust us, once you see how good it looks, you’ll think twice about sharing.
📍 You’ll find them in the main plaza in Mijas Pueblo (just by the car park)

Fancy a Day Trip? Head into Málaga
If you’ve got time (and the patience for a bit of traffic), Málaga city is well worth a visit during Semana Santa. The processions there are some of the biggest in Spain – huge floats carried by hundreds of costaleros, full marching bands, and crowds lining the streets from morning till night. It’s busy, yes, but incredibly impressive. There’s a reason people travel from all over the world to see it.
Best bet is to take the train from Fuengirola if you can – saves you the parking headache. Go early, grab a coffee in the historic centre, and enjoy the show. And if you’re there into the evening, grab a bite somewhere like El Pimpi and soak up the atmosphere.
Happy Easter from All of Us
Whatever you’re doing this weekend – whether it's watching a procession, crafting chocolate bunnies, or enjoying a roast with friends – we hope you have a lovely Easter.
And – we’ll be open on Monday as normal if you need anything.
